St.Ann’s English Medium School

Realizing the paramount importance of true Education In a changing society Mr. Gopu Reddy Bishop of Visakhapatnam, requested our Regional Superior Mother Rosa to start a new school at Rajahmundry, along with other Missionary activities. The superior Sr.Alice was entrusted with the hard task of shouldering the pioneer works of this infant institution. Soon she came to Rajahmundry and on 1.7.1970 a nursery school with Eight (8) children was started in the R.C.M Church compound, with two sisters in-charge of it. All were not very encouraging at the start as it is the case with any human effort. Though it was a humble beginning with eight children, at the end of the first year, there were 100 children on the roll, with four teachers. As the strength increased, many problems came up with it. The school had no land of its own, no building, no quarters for the staff. The school records with humble gratitude, the unforgettable support, advice and help received from Sri T. Bulliah, the veteran educationalist and founder of Gurukulam school. He helped the sisters greatly in negotiating for purchasing the land from its owner, Sri Chalapathi Rao, a sprawling 10 acres of land.

The present school building, with 10 acres of land was purchased for Rs.Two lakhs and some necessary construction was made to make it as it is today. Of course it was not a proper one. The school was then shifted to the new premises with the opening of the 3rd standard on 08.12.1971. By the end of 1972 the strength was 204 with seven teachers. 1973 saw the opening of class V and the appointment of a Telugu teacher which was an added speciality.Foundation for the now existing main block was laid on 22nd November 1977 by Rev. Mother Esther Staubli. This was inaugurated by Mr.Ashok Kumar Tigidi, the then sub-collector and was blessed by Rt.Bishop, Rev.Ignatius Gopu, on March 2nd, 1980. The school, which ever since its inception has the motto “LEARN, LOVE, LABOUR” got affiliation to the council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi, on May 6th,1978. The first batch of students who appeared for the ICSE Examination had 10 students. The number increased as years passed. Presently 167 students are going to take the ICSE examination in 2016. During the past one and a half decades our school has been registering excellent results.

The school has been enjoying unparalleled patronage from parents who send their children to this school aspiring good discipline among them. This increasing number of students necessitated expansion in accommodation. Slowly but steadily the number of sufficiently furnished class rooms increased, thanks to the generosity of the mother house.
